Anesthesia

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery requires training in anesthesia after graduation from dental school and several additional years of hospital-based surgical training. Dr. Emami's surgical staff are experienced Oral and Maxillofacial surgical assistants, who assist in administration of conscious IV sedation, general anesthesia, and surgery. Dr. Emami has on staff a Certified Nurse Anesthetist who assists him in all procedures requiring anesthesia. All staff are CPR certified.

Types of Anesthesia

Anesthesia can be administered locally, intravenously, or by inhalation and consists of an administration of medications the effects of which are listed below:

Local this numbs an area of your body, and you are able to stay awake and aware of what is happening.
Conscious Sedation this is a mild sedative to relax you. You stay awake, but may not remember the procedure afterwards.
General Anesthesia allows you to be unconscious (fall asleep) during your procedure. You should not feel any pain during your procedure.

Possible Side Effects of Anesthesia

You may feel disoriented, groggy, and confused when awaking from your procedure. Some other common side effects, which can occur rarely but usually resolve quickly include:

•  Vomiting or nausea, which is usually alleviated with an anti-nausea medication
•  Shakiness
•  Chills

We will also:
Monitor your heart rate and rhythm with an ECG, breathing, blood oxygen levels, and blood pressure during your procedure.
Manage pain you may have after your procedure.
Ensure your comfort before, during, and after the procedure.
